If you collaborate with individuals in global organizations and communities, this tool will enhance your understanding of cultural differences in communication, leadership, decision making, scheduling, giving feedback, and evaluating teams or peers across diverse cultures.

Over the last decade, I have worked extensively with organizations worldwide, spanning from Singapore to the USA. That’s why I decided to assess my “Personal Profile Tool” using Erin Meyer‘s Culture Map model. Erin Meyer is the New York Times best selling author and Professor at INSEAD. She wrote two books: The Culture Map: Breaking through the invisible boundaries of global business and No Rules Rules: Netflix and the Culture of Reinvention.

My Personal Profile on Culture Map

Interestingly, my personal results varied from my country’s, Poland, results on the eight Culture Map behavioral scales. I’ve also plotted my profile against various countries on a single graph, which you can find below.

What have I realized about my style?

1️⃣ Communication Style: I lean towards low-context communication, valuing precision and clarity without much nuance or the need for reading between the lines.
2️⃣ Feedback Preference: I tend to prefer direct negative feedback over layered, diplomatic, indirect feedback.
3️⃣ Leadership Approach: My leadership style leans more towards egalitarian and inclusive rather than hierarchical.
4️⃣ Decision-Making: I encourage group consensus rather than top-down communication in decision-making processes.
5️⃣ Trust Building: I blend cognitive and affective trust, finding a balance between task-based trust and relationship-based trust.
6️⃣ Handling Disagreements: I see open disagreements as a positive contribution to group dynamics, fostering diverse opinions.
7️⃣ Scheduling: I appreciate timetables, structure, and punctuality.
8️⃣ Persuasion Style: I navigate between inductive and deductive arguments, employing practical case studies and stories.

And one last, but crucial point.
Although my personal profile differs in several aspects from the country profiles of those I collaborate with, I firmly believe in creating fruitful, valuable, and enduring business and personal relationships. The Culture Map provides me with a deeper understanding of how others interpret and respond to my signals, enabling me to be more mindful of their communication styles.

Finally, let’s recognize our common humanity that goes beyond cultural distinctions. Values such as kindness, appreciation, love, care, and family connect us all, no matter where we come from. I’m very grateful for the opportunity to work with so many amazing people worldwide. It has been the most satisfying journey of my life. Please stay in touch, connect, and continue inspiring each other.
