I love returning to the university as a guest practitioner, collaborating with young people. This time, I was invited by Pawel Dudek to Kozminski University to discuss the topic of intercultural communication, a subject close to my heart, with approximately 40 students from around the world.

Throughout my career, I’ve had the privilege of working with people from diverse cultural backgrounds. I’ve conducted workshops in locations such as Singapore, Armenia, the UK, USA, Norway, Belgium, Germany, and Dubai, allowing me to interact with a wide array of cultures.

There are several vital lessons I’ve learned about intercultural communication, some of which came the hard way, while many were graciously imparted by remarkable mentors and guides. Here are a few key takeaways:

1) Cultivate Curiosity

The most effective way to engage with individuals from different cultures, whether in a business or personal context, is to remain curious. Ask questions about people’s stories, origins, and roots. Listen without judgment. Acknowledging and giving recognition to others is an essential aspect, as people appreciate being seen and heard.

2) Demonstrate Respect

When engaging with individuals from different cultures, it’s crucial to learn as much as possible about their culture, rituals, symbols, and behavioral patterns. Some cultures, often referred to as “high-context cultures,” place great emphasis on symbolism and specific communication rules, which can make or break a situation. In contrast, other cultures may have a more direct, straightforward, and action-driven communication style (“low-context cultures). Once we understand these unique cultural traits, we can enhance our communication and collaboration.

3) The Power of Intent

Despite our differences, there are universal human values that unite us all. It’s essential to communicate your intentions, motives, what drives you, and your purpose. Shared goals can be the most effective way to build relationships amidst the cultural differences we encounter.

I want to extend a heartfelt thank you to all the students who participated in yesterday’s class. Your contributions helped all of us gain a deeper understanding of intercultural communication.
